Artist's Comments

Inari is the Japanese god/spirit of rice, fertility, agriculture and industry. Foxes are regarded as the messengers of Inari, so Inari shrines are typically guarded by fox statues. This particular statue lives at Fushimi Inari, the head Inari shrine located just outside of Kyoto. The shrine was founded in 711 AD, making it 1,298 years old this year.

Things this old tend to develop a life and a power of their own.

11x15" acrylic on illustration board. The original will be for sale at Anthrocon.
Critiques welcome and encouraged.

Impressive, I thought it was a photograph at first, you really nailed the different textures of the stones/moss/fur, and the dappled, blurry look of the background.

The thumbnail of this almost looked like a photograph! You've done such an awesome job with blurring out the backgound, and the textures are just amazing! I also really like the contrast between the textures of the real fox and the stone one. Not to mention their general presence next to each other that makes a nice contrasting pattern in the composition. Oh if I had the money I'd so buy this. I really hope you make prints of this. I love Oriental stuff and foxes. This would be perfect in my living room. :)
