Mathais figurine by rah-bop Mathais figurine by rah-bop
A birthday gift for *kacfrog711, who spoils me, so I must do my best to spoil her back.

Her art muse, Mathais, probably about 1 ft tall (I forgot to measure. x_x), made of sculpey, painted with acrylics. All of his clothes except the pants were hand-sewn, and everything but the manacle is removable. ;3

I can't even remember the last time I used sculpey... maybe when I was 10? I forgot how soft it is. Now that I'm used to stuff like plaster and clay, I had trouble with judging the pressure in my hands and kept accidentally squishing him! (ono!) His hair used to be a tassel, which I massacred, flipped upside down, and stuck in his head. The manacle is made of aluminum and fine chain. I didn't use any references while sculpting him, though I probably should have. x_x

About the censor bar: this sculpture is actually rated G. I thought the shapeless blob contrasted too much with the rest of his sculpted self, so/and I felt like adding the bar. Let me have my fun! X3

Mathais, random doodle in the corner (c) *kacfrog711

wow this is amazing! you said you used a tassel for the hair. obviously you can't BAKE it with the tassel in it so how did it stay? or does it randomly pop out? XD This looks great though :)

It is actually just a tassel that I got at the fabric shop. I made his head hollow and once it was baked, I flipped the tassel upside-down and jammed it in his head. Instant hair.

Super sculpey boxes typically just come that way, so no mixing required!

Ah, yeah, I just buy larger packages because it's cheaper that way. I paint everything in the end, so the original color doesn't matter to me at all.

Wows. Gorgeous! I love that you used a softer type of clay. It really gives him a fleshier look to him. I also love the hair. Good stuff :D

*crack* *thud*

A-hem. . .Pardon me. That was just my lower jaw hitting the floor. *reattaches*

I'm just starting out with Polymer clay, and while I do enjoy the idea of scultping (it's so much more. . .tangible than drawing), I am nowhere near your skill level. How long has it taken you to be able to create something this proportioned?

Well, uhhhh, I made a bunch of ugly blobby things when I was a kid, then all but abandoned sculpey for about 10 years. And then I bought a new box of sculpey (and was like "when did they stop making it in white omg?!") and did this.

I think a major part of what I can do with sculpting comes from what I can do with 2-D mediums, like pencil and paper. I've done a ton more drawing than I have sculpting, but even when I sculpt I refer back to the experience I have in anatomy and the human (or animal) body. (And to be fair, it's only mediocre at best. :/) Another very important thing is to be very, very, very patient. You have to spend a lot of time fussing (in my experience) with the clay in order to make it how you imagine. I'm still not very good at this, and they don't come out exactly the way I want, but I'm getting better so I suppose it's the most I can ask. X3

And also, I did not comment here either! BLARG!
Maannnn, it's so coool! The anatomy is amazing!
And not to sound weird or anything, but the nipples are eerily realistic! Like you shrunk down a man, and turned him to sculpy with your MAGIC POWERS! *Twilight Zone music*
And it reminds me of a Ken/Tarzan doll!

Updated Ken doll! :D The hair and muss-culls are neat.

The middle nekkid version reminds me of Disney's Tarzan. Gotta be the hair.

I really don't know what to say... huh. And I just realized you didn't use a reference. That's incredible. The body looks so realistic, and the hair-tastle thing is a very nice touch. Jeez, I can only imagine what a pain the hands were.

If I were your friend I know I'd be playing with this till it broke, twirling the hair and taking the clothes off and putting them on and poking at his pretty little ears and fingers. Sculptures are so irresistible. This is why I can't have nice things.
